Over time, it needed to be replaced.<br>But the homeowner did not want another deck. He wanted paving stones instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make that happen, the ground needed to be raised about 2\u20133 feet.<br>His idea was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Surround the area with large rocks (about 2\u20133 feet in diameter)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fill the inside with soil<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install paving stones on top<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This way, he could open the sliding door and step directly into the backyard\u2014no stairs needed.<br>He also thought filling with soil would feel more \u201cpermanent\u201d than building another deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Problem: Filled Soil Settles<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There is one very important thing to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Filled soil (built-up soil) settles over time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I had to explain that installing paving stones right away would not be efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soil needs time to compact naturally.<br>I recommended waiting at least <strong>one year<\/strong>, and ideally <strong>two years<\/strong>, before installing paving stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My suggestion was:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use gravel temporarily for about two years<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let the soil settle naturally<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then install the paving stones<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It may feel inconvenient, but it prevents future problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Truth About Soil Compaction<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When a retaining wall is built and soil is filled behind it, people often want to build something immediately:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A garden bed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paving stones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pond<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A gazebo<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A shed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But here is the truth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you cut into an existing slope (undisturbed ground), you can build right away.<br>That soil has been compacted naturally over many years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if the ground is filled, you must wait.<br>Because it will settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how large or heavy the roller or compactor is, the soil will still settle over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rain soaks the soil.<br>Gravity slowly pulls it down.<br>Only time truly compacts soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You may ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat if we use sand, gravel, or road base instead of soil?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer:<br>It settles less than soil\u2014but it still settles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That is why in road construction or large site grading projects, contractors often:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Fill the land first<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wait for natural settlement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Then continue construction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If there is no time to wait, they use more gravel and sand and compact it with water.<br>But they must accept that future repairs may be necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Real Example<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One day, a plumber had to dig a deep trench in a front lawn for pipe work.<br>The hole was about shoulder-depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, when I returned, the work was finished and the soil was filled back in.<br>The lawn looked flat and clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But something was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When compacted soil is dug out, it becomes loose and increases in volume.<br>So after refilling, there should be extra soil left over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the refilled area should be slightly raised\u2014because it will settle later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the plumber had leveled it perfectly flat and removed the extra soil.<br>It looked good at that moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He did not realize it would sink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After several heavy rains, the area sank several inches.<br>I later had to bring more soil, refill it, and repair the lawn again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Simple Rule<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Filled soil settles.<br>Only time makes soil truly stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Water and gravity are slow, but they are powerful.<br>And in landscaping, ignoring that power always leads to problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Written by Andy Lee<br>Owner of Andy&#8217;s Landscape Inc. \u2013 Landscape Contractor in Maple Ridge, BC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is a story about a backyard with a height difference between the back door and the yard.
