You don\u2019t spend a long time there, but it gets a lot of use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it should be <strong>functional<\/strong> and fit well with the neighborhood. It\u2019s the \u201cface\u201d of your house and gives visitors a bright, welcoming first impression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>The back yard is very <strong>private<\/strong> and a space where you spend more time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can walk outside, sit, or relax there. Even if you stay inside, your eyes often rest on the back yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it should be a space you <strong>love<\/strong> and <strong>need<\/strong>, and a place where you can show your personality freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can have a vegetable garden, a jacuzzi, a small gazebo, a waterfall, or a pond\u2014whatever you like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can also be a mini golf area, basketball hoop, or playground. The back yard shows <strong>who you are<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Comparing to indoor spaces:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The front yard is like the <strong>entrance and living room<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The back yard is like your <strong>bedroom and workspace<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why most people prefer <strong>simple designs<\/strong> in the front yard and <strong>creative, personal designs<\/strong> in the back yard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The back yard is where you can try <strong>everything you want<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes privacy is needed, so you may need to block certain views. How much and where to block is very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You might be okay with neighbors seeing some parts but don\u2019t want direct eye contact. In this case, partial screening is enough. Too much screening can feel closed in.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How and how much you block depends on the <strong>character of the space<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you live with family, your garden needs may change depending on the members:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>With young children, the garden may be different than with teenagers or no children. Needs change over time.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>If you enjoy gardening and hands-on work,<br>your back yard can be like an <strong>adult playground<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can make, move, or change whatever you want.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In this case, you don\u2019t need to worry too much about durability because you can fix or change things yourself.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the <strong>basic structure<\/strong>\u2014the big, permanent parts\u2014should be made strong and durable.<br>Within that structure, creating or changing smaller elements is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>For many seasons, you may spend more time <strong>looking at the garden from inside<\/strong> rather than being outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, it\u2019s important to balance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Spaces that are good to use<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spaces that are good to see<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>As a landscape designer, designing back yards is more exciting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I get to think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What kind of space does the homeowner need?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What views will they enjoy?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What suggestions will make them happiest?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a fun and satisfying challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\">Written by Andy Lee<br>Owner of Andy&#8217;s Landscape Inc. \u2013 Landscape Contractor in Maple Ridge, BC<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The front yard is a space connected to your neighbors and is the first impression of your home.
