{"id":25,"date":"2026-02-27T22:00:32","date_gmt":"2026-02-28T06:00:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/andyslandscape.ca\/blog\/?p=25"},"modified":"2026-03-05T21:15:46","modified_gmt":"2026-03-06T05:15:46","slug":"potted-vs-in-ground-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/andyslandscape.ca\/blog\/potted-vs-in-ground-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Planting Trees in Pots vs In-Ground"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Today, a customer asked me whether it\u2019s better to plant a tree in a pot or directly in the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The answer depends on what you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Planting in a Pot<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Advantages:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Easy to move.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Easy to change flowers or trees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can choose pots of different height, texture, and color. The pot itself can become a design feature.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your garden has snails or pillbugs, keeping plants in pots can protect them.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Disadvantages:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You need to water and fertilize carefully.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Plants grow slower and need repotting eventually.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Soil dries quickly, and nutrients can be lost fast.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Planting in the Ground<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Advantages:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trees grow better and stronger. The natural power of the soil, sometimes called \u201csoil strength,\u201d is very important.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Watering and fertilizing are easier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Disadvantages:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Moving or replacing trees is hard and can damage the tree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of my customer, the planting area was next to a sidewalk. I told them to consider that pots could be damaged by people or animals passing by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you ask me what I would do, I usually plant directly in the ground. Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I have experience planting and moving trees, so I can handle the challenges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It\u2019s easier to manage watering and fertilizing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most importantly, the trees grow stronger and healthier.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>However, you are not me.
