Drainage Materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sand &amp; Base Materials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Decorative Rock<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Concrete Aggregates<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Many homeowners in <strong>Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows<\/strong> ask which gravel works best for drainage, pathways, or parking areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at each one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gravel &amp; Drainage Materials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most commonly used materials is <strong>3\/4&#8243; Granite<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is mainly used for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>backfill behind retaining walls<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>drainage at the base of structures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mulch or surface material in walking areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>French drains to solve garden drainage problems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the stone pieces are angular, water flows through it easily and it stays fairly stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sand &amp; Base Materials<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These materials are mainly used as <strong>base aggregates<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Materials such as <strong>road base<\/strong> or <strong>limestone<\/strong> are mixtures of crushed gravel, small stones, and sand or rock dust.<br>This mix compacts very well and creates a strong foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Common uses include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>parking areas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>artificial turf base<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>pathways and walking surfaces<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Limestone is slightly more expensive, but it has a very attractive color.<br>When wet, it shows a slightly deeper bluish tone that many people like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also compacts extremely well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people use <strong>3\/4&#8243; granite<\/strong> for parking areas because it looks nice, but loose gravel tends to move under vehicle tires.<br>Base materials, on the other hand, compact and become much more stable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Decorative Rock<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Decorative rock usually includes <strong>river rock<\/strong> and <strong>lava rock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These stones look beautiful, but they are not ideal for walking areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>River rocks are round, so they move when stepped on.<br>Lava rocks are lighter and more fragile, and they can break under pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, for areas where the stones are mainly for visual effect, they can look very attractive.<br>They also come in many different sizes, so you can choose depending on the design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your garden has many falling leaves, avoid very small stones.<br>When blowing leaves away, the small stones can also get blown out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially true with <strong>lava rock<\/strong>, which is very light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Concrete Aggregates<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>These materials are used for making concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concrete requires <strong>clean sand and aggregates<\/strong>, usually <strong>washed sand<\/strong>, so that salts and impurities are removed.<br>This helps maintain the strength of the concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Common Mistakes People Make<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few common mistakes homeowners make when choosing gravel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using river rock or lava rock in walking areas<\/strong><br>River rock moves under your feet, and lava rock can break over time when stepped on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Using 3\/4&#8243;
