When we work on a garden, we often need to dig the ground.
This may be for building a foundation, adjusting the ground level, removing trees, or removing old structures.
But sometimes digging can cause a big problem.
There may be gas lines, electrical cables, or communication lines buried underground.
Safety is one concern.
But the cost to repair damaged lines can also be very expensive.
So before digging, it is always a good idea to check what is underground first.
Do you need to go to City Hall to get drawings?
Do you need to contact each utility company?
No.
One phone call is enough.
You can also apply online.
And it’s free.
With one request, you can receive information about underground utilities on your property.
However, you should apply about 3 days before you plan to dig.
Different utility companies will send you emails with information about underground lines. This usually takes a few days, up to about three days.
You will receive maps showing the approximate location of the lines and also safety instructions for digging.
In most cases, major utility lines are buried fairly deep underground, usually more than about 3 feet deep.
However, the ground level may have changed over time. Someone may have removed soil in the past, making the lines closer to the surface. So it is always important to be careful.
Most gas and electrical lines usually enter from the front yard, because the main lines are typically located under the road.
But sometimes there can also be lines in the backyard, so it is good to know the information about your property.
This is especially important when using machines or equipment, because they can cause more damage than digging by hand.
Before digging, always check first.
